Jaipur Museums-A List

JAIPUR  can not recreate the times gone by but it has done its best to collect and catalogue and display the bits and pieces which are some how connected to the elusive past.If you want a glimpse however illusory- visit the places mentioned here below and be enthralled.

City Palace Museum (0141-2608055)

Mubarak Mahal houses the ‘toshakhana’.There are  brocade,silk,and fine muslin costumes of the jaipur Royal family dating back to the 18th century.

Sileh Khana has one of the finest collections of antique weapons including Raja Man Singh I st’s cutlass weighing 11 solid pounds.There is also on display Mirza Raja Jai Singh’s turban shaped helmet.

Diwan-I-Am houses rare manuscripts,miniature paintings and rare carpets.

Jai Garg Museum(0141-2610494) is housed in the most impregnable forts (built by Mirza Raja Jai Singh & Sawai Jai Singh) in the world.It showcases Rajput artifacts and weaponry.

Remains of 16th century canon foundry where Jaivana was cast can still be found. It was world’s largest wheeled canon-9 feet high,over 20 feet long and weighs 50 tons-engraved with scroll-work it took 4 elephants to change its direction.

Albert Hall Museum(0141-2570099)

Recently renovated with a budget of 4.5 Crore Rupees-this museum is known for Persian Carpets,Egyptian Mummy,antique crockery and metal objects collections.

Museum of Indology (0141-2607455)

On Jawaharlal Nehru Marg it houses a large collection of manuscripts,miniature paintings and other artifacts.

Dolls Museum(0141-2619359)

It  has a large collection of Dolls from all over the world.It is housed in Seth Anandi Lal Poddar Deaf & Dumb School on JLN Marg.

Sanjay Sharma Museum

Located in thateron ka rasta it houses  ancient  manuscripts,maps,costumes,paintings.

Anokhi Museum Of Hand Printing at Kheri Gate,Amber(0141-2530226)It has a cafe also.

Proposed

Museum at Jal Mahal

It is proposed to build ‘Sawai Jai Singh’s Vision Of Jaipur’ an 18 feet long and 10 feet wide scale model of jaipur here.Budget 5 crores.

Museum At Old Vidhan Sabha

With a budget of rupees 25 crores it is proposed to exhibit 450 statues seized from idol smugglers.They are also going to exhibit paintings in an art gallery,antique coins, and150 to 200 samples of traditional jewelery.

Museum At Hawa Mahal(0141-2618862)

Built in 1799 by the poet King Sawai Pratap Singh to enable his Queens to  view the city processions from ‘parda’.This palace,about 50 feet high, is mostly facade and with  about 953 windows.Under renovation presently by the Rajasthan Archeology Department with a budget of 4.8 crores- it is proposed to house a museum here.

It is also proposed to open museum shops at 4 main tourist spots to provide souvenirs- in the shape of Replicas of antiquities in the museum,Logos,T-shirts,Monograms,Picture Postcards- to the tourists visiting the museums.In a unique first-Ganga Nagar Sugar Mills has acquired the age old formulae of liquor made in the princely states to make the liquors generally available to the general public and tourists alike.These liquors are readily available in full bottle size and presentation sets( ‘Kesar Kasturi’, ‘Jagmohan’, ‘Chandrahas’ and ‘Mawalin’ are available in miniature bottles).

Asha Liqueur is made from over 40 ethnic Indian spices and herbs – including cinnamon, almond, clove and saffron amongst others. The drink is targeted at connoisseurs who seek “the mystical aura of the true oriental experience”.Developed under the patronage of the Maharaja of Udaipur, is now being test marketed overseas by the McDowells.
